This idea of a "God of the afterlife" is similar to Christian beliefs in Satan. Satan rules over Hell, tormenting souls for all eternity. The difference here lies in the fact that Satan is believed to encourage sin among the living, and there is no peace for the souls who find themselves in his grasp. The Aztec underworld is more similar to Purgatory, a place where a soul goes until their judgement is decided.
